  2. EUDORA FOR MACINTOSH, Version 5.1
  3.  
  4. This is version 5.1 of Eudora for Macintosh. This Read Me provides information 
  5. on the following topics:
  6.  
  7. *  Minimum Requirements

  14. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  15.  
  16. To use Eudora 5.1 for Macintosh, you must have the following:
  17.  
  18. *  Macintosh with a PowerPC processor.
  19. *  Macintosh OS System 8.1 or above.
  20. *  An Internet mail account which utilizes the POP3 or IMAP protocol with an 
  21. Internet Service Provider or otherwise on the network. *  Access to the mail 
  22. account via a dedicated TCP/IP (Internet) network connection or via PPP dial-up
  23. networking through a modem.

  26. INSTALLATION
  27.  
  28. Note: Eudora 5.1 for Macintosh may be installed over any existing copy of 
  29. Eudora.
  30.  
  31. To install Eudora 5.1 for Macintosh, do the following:
  32.  
  33. 1.  Make a backup copy of your existing Eudora Folder (usually located in your 
  34. System Folder, or in the Documents folder), and make a backup copy of your 
  35. existing Eudora  application folder, and put the two copies in a separate area.
  36.  
  37. 2.  Quit any applications you are running.
  38.  
  39. 3.  Remove any plug-ins that did not come with the Eudora Pro software.
  40.  
  41. 4.  If installing off of a CD, insert the Eudora Pro 5.1 CD into your CD drive.
  42.  
  43. 5.  Double-click on the Eudora 5.1 installer icon to start the installation 
  44. program.  The Eudora Pro splash screen is displayed. Click Continue to display 
  45. the Eudora Read Me window. Once you have reviewed the contents of the Read Me 
  46. window, click Continue to display the License Agreement.
  47.  
  48. Note: The contents of the Read Me and License Agreement windows can be printed 
  49. or saved to a file for later review.
  50.  
  51. 6. Once you have reviewed the contents of the license agreement, if you agree, 
  52. click Agree. 
  53.  
  54. 7. The Eudora Install dialog is displayed, and the Custom Install item is
  55. selected, allowing you to select which items you want to install. To see a 
  56. description of an item, click on the item  (the description is displayed just 
  57. below the selection area).

  59. 8. To install all of the items, in a new folder, select the "Install Eudora for the
  60. first time" option. To update an existing install of Eudora (merge the new files
  61. into an existing install), select the "Update an existing Eudora" option.
  62.  
  63. Click the Install button.
  64.  
  65. 9. Depending on the option chosen in step 8, A dialog is displayed asking you where
  66.  you want to install the Eudora Application Folder, or asking you to select your
  67. existing Eudora Application folder.
  68.  
  69. 10. If you are installing for the first time, click the "Install" button. If you are
  70. updating an existing installation, highlight your existing folder int he dialog, and
  71. then click the "Install Into <existing folder name>" button.
  72.  
  73. 11. Once the installation is complete, you may be prompted to restart your 
  74. Macintosh. Click Restart if prompted. Otherwise, click Quit when the installation
  75. is complete.

  77. This completes the installation of the Eudora software. To find out how to set 
  78. up Eudora so that you can send and receive e-mail, see the User Manual section 
  79. "Opening and Configuring Eudora." For details about the files in the master 
  80. Eudora Folder that have just been updated or installed in your System (or 
  81. Documents) Folder (this holds all your mail and other important files), as well
  82. as the Eudora Application Folder that you've just installed in the destination 
  83. dialog above, see their corresponding sections in the Reference Manual.

  85. ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE
  86.  
  87. Acrobat Reader¿ 4.0
  88.  
  89. We include an installer for Acrobat Reader¿ version 4.0 with your purchase of 
  90. Eudora Pro. Acrobat Reader¿ version 4.0 allows you to open, read, and print the
  91. Eudora 5.1 User Manuals located in the Eudora Pro folder within the 
  92. Documentation folder. This is provided as a download within the Custom Install 
  93. section of the installer.

  95. QuickTime¬ 3.0.2 or newer is required for Eudora to function properly.
  96.  
  97. Install QuickTime¬ to display inline graphics, play movies and sounds within 
  98. your email messages. If Quicktime 3.0.2 or newer is not found on your startup 
  99. disk, a link to Apple's Quicktime download page (http://www.apple.com/quicktime
  100. /download) will be installed onto your desktop.

  102. BUG REPORTS
  103.  
  104. If you experience something you think might be a bug in Eudora, please report 
  105. it by sending a message to mac-eudora-bugs@qualcomm.com. Describe what you did,
  106. what happened, what version of Eudora you have, any error messages Eudora gave (
  107. the numbers in {}'s are especially important), what kind of computer you have, 
  108. what version of System Software you're using, and anything else you think might
  109. be relevant.

  111. You will receive an automated response indicating that your bug report has been
  112. received and forwarded to our engineering staff. Unless additional information 
  113. is needed, you will not receive a direct response.
  114.  
  115. REQUESTS FOR FEATURES
  116.  
  117. From time to time, everyone comes up with an idea for something they'd like 
  118. their software to do differently. If you come across an idea that you think 
  119. might make a nice enhancement to Eudora Pro, your input is always welcome. 
  120. Please send any suggestions or requests for new features to eudora-suggest@
  121. qualcomm.com.

  123. You will receive an automated response indicating that your suggestion has been
  124. received and forwarded to our engineering staff. Unless additional information 
  125. is needed, you will not receive a personal response.

  127. ABOUT MODES AND SUBSCRIPTIONS
  128.  
  129. The software is available in three modes: Light mode (no cost; reduced set of 
  130. features available), Sponsored mode (no cost; full feature set with sponsor 
  131. window) and Paid mode (annual subscription fee; full feature set without 
  132. sponsor window).
  133.  
  134. To use the Sponsored mode version of the software, you will be required to 
  135. complete a profile questionnaire after a trial period. Please note that 
  136. Eudora's privacy policy (http://www.eudora.com/privacy) governs QUALCOMM's use 
  137. of profile information. If you choose not to complete the profile questionnaire
  138. after the termination of the trial period, your copy of Eudora will revert to 
  139. Light mode.

  141. When QUALCOMM releases new versions of the software, they'll be made available 
  142. at www.eudora.com for use in Sponsored mode at no charge. If you purchase a 
  143. Paid mode registration code for the software, you're entitled to a 12-month 
  144. subscription during which you can download new versions of the software and run
  145. them in Paid mode at no additional charge. The 12-month subscription period 
  146. starts when you purchase your Paid mode registration code. You can renew the 
  147. subscription by paying an annual fee; the software will prompt you when it's 
  148. time to do this.
